How to Tell if Your Motherboard Supports NVMe?

How to Tell if Your Motherboard Supports NVMe?

NVMe is the Non-Volatile Memory Express, a drive system for M-2 SSD drives. SSD SATA uses M-2 technology that transfers the data at about 600MB/s. On the other hand, the rarely used NVMe technology moves the data at more than 3.5GB/s for reading and writing.

Today we will explain How to tell if your motherboard supports NVMe. You must understand how this NVMe drives work and how faster they can deliver you the results. Because of its high-speed communications, it is now possible for us to develop such drives that can store much greater data than their predecessors.

NVMe technology is quite expensive; for example, if a simple M-2 SSD drive is for $50, the same capacity in an NVMe SSD drive would be around $140. It is the main reason behind its occasional use in mass.

As the day passes, we see new and better applications developed for domestic home users and commercial users in today’s modern world. We need a better understanding of our storage devices, such as SATA SSDs.

Another significant feature of the NVMe SSD drives is that with this technology. We can now store a large volume of our data on them without hustling to divide our data into multiple SSD drives. The new innovative designs are becoming much more minor, but their capacities have increased.

Do all motherboards support NVMe?

The answer to this question is merely the NO. This technology is not as famous as M-2 SATA SSD drives. It will be not immoral if we say none of two persons out of three knows what these are and how they work. Still, many people don’t know the full potential of this NVMe technology. For this reason, they are still to gather and divide their data into multiple drives. They pay heavy fees to companies to save their data on their servers.

A general idea to knowing whether your motherboard supports the NVMe SSD or not is simple. All the modern motherboards have written their specific specs information on their boxes. Other than this, you must know how these NVMe ports look, and by seeing the motherboard, you will know whether the motherboard has the related ports in it or not.

How to tell if your motherboard supports NVMe?

The most vital question on this topic is, How can we know our PC supports the NVMe. The global IT society has specified three modes to understand this information regarding your queries. These are as follows.

Three modes to know How can we know our PC supports the NVMe:

  1. Physically check the motherboard ports for NVMe,
  2. Motherboard packing Box, and
  3. whether BIOS supports it or not.

Below are minor details for these.

1.     Check NVMe M-2 Ports on M/Board

First, you must know what M-2 NVMe ports look like on the motherboards. An NVMe M.2 port will have an M-Key configuration, and the only cut on the M.2 port will be on the right-hand side.

The NVMe port on the motherboard will have similar dimensions on both laptops and desktops. You should check the pivotal location, and it should be on the right flank. The M.2 port with a left-key, i.e., B-Key, isn’t compatible with NVMe SSDs, and this B-Key port is actually for the M.2 SATA SSDs.

2.     M/Board Packing Box

Nowadays, every passing day is bringing new and innovative developments in all ways of our lives, especially in the IT sector. All major manufacturers of motherboards are printing their motherboard’s specific specs for the ease of their customers.

Other than this, you can check all information on google by writing the exact model number and manufacturer of your motherboard. Google will probably show you the first result with the concerned website and different product-related details.

3.     BIOS Supports

It is another critical method; as you all know, the BIOS stores each specific computer-related technical information and will find your motherboard’s full details and info and its supported devices list.

Usually, when you plug in and play the new NVMe M-2 SATA SSD drive, you will not be able to give priority to using the booting device with the NVMe drive. To solve these errors, you should read the troubleshooting carefully on the motherboard’s official website or the booklet in the box.

Pros

There are many pros to this new technology of NVMe SATA SSD drives; some of these pros are given below.

  1. These NVMe technologies have superior storage for your PC.
  2. The NVMe technology has a superior speed with a latency of about 2.8 microseconds only.
  3. This new technology communicates directly with the system CPU for the best performance.
  4. The NVMe efficiently transports data between storage systems and servers.

Cons

  1. The NVMe-based SSD drives are much more expensive than standard 2.5″ SSD drives.
  2. Many old systems do not support the new NVMe technology.
  3. The NVMe SSD drives are not cost-effective for storing large volumes of data.
  4. The NVMe SSD drives lack universality and creates future problems for your system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is The Main Difference Between Non-Nvme And Nvme Ssds?

The main difference between NVMe and non-NVMe SSD drives is that NVMe drives have much faster speeds for their communications.

Do All Motherboards Support The Nvme Technology?

Yes, all modern and latest motherboards support NVMe technology except those made explicitly for Non-NVMe boards.

What is the Difference Between A Simple M-2 Port And With Nvme Port?

NVMe port has a cut on its right side, whereas M-2 has two indentations on both sides of the port.

Conclusion

As every day passes, people in the IT community are developing innovative and most modern tools to ease the process of storing precious data. As we tried to explain to you about the NVMe SATA SSD, it is the future of the coming days. Because with its high-speed communications of about 4GB/s, now users can store data at much greater volumes.

As we discussed above,  How to tell your motherboard supports NVMe. We need to understand how to differentiate between NVMe-supported and non-supported motherboards. If the motherboard doesn’t support the NV?Me then it is crucial for us to buy a new one.
