Can You Use Denatured Alcohol To Clean Motherboard? | Simple Guide!

Before answering that can you use denatured alcohol to clean motherboard let’s discuss chemicals. A variety of chemicals can be found throughout the electronic assembly and repair process, but no solvent appears more frequently than denatured alcohol. It is widely used in cleaning and as a primary component of fluxes. It dissolves a wide range of polar and nonpolar soils and is frequently used to dissolve and remove light oils, fingerprints, cutting fluids, flux residues, carbon deposits, and mould release. It is also easily miscible in water, making it an effective drying agent.

What Is Denatured Alcohol? :

Denatured alcohol is used in Motherboards and PCB assembly to clean flux residues from recently soldered circuit boards, as well as in PCB repair and rework. Denatured is also used to clean SMT stencils of solder paste or adhesive. Denatured alcohol is commonly used in maintenance cleaning to remove caked-on and burnt-on flux from SMT reflow ovens, wave soldering fingers, selective soldering nozzles, pallets, and anywhere else flux tends to collect in automated soldering processes.

The higher the surface tension, the more water denatured alcohol is contained. As a result, the solvent beads up more as it dries rather than remaining wet or sheet, which can result in spots. When cleaning mirrors, lenses, and other optics, water spots are especially troublesome.

How to Clean A Motherboard? :

Motherboards can be cleaned with denatured alcohol. This type of alcohol is extremely effective at dissolving the most common motherboard contaminants. It is also electrically non-conductive and quickly evaporates. Furthermore, if inhaled, denatured alcohol has a very low level of toxicity. All of these characteristics make it an excellent product for cleaning motherboards.

You can clean your motherboard with rubbing alcohol, but denatured alcohol is preferable due to its superior solvent properties. Make sure to carefully remove the thermal paste so that you don’t damage your motherboard. Denatured alcohol is highly recommended and of high quality for cleaning electronic devices. This denatured alcohol is excellent for cleaning thermal paste. Simply take a small amount and wipe the dirt off the motherboard with tissue paper.

To clean motherboards, any type of alcohol can be used. However, there are other factors that should be considered, the most important of which is toxicity. Many other types of alcohol with strong cleaning properties are also highly toxic. Methanol is a common example of a toxic substance that should not be used to clean motherboards.

Steps:

Cleaning a motherboard from denatured alcohol is not a problem at all. It’s extremely hassle-free. However, it requires a few steps.

  • The first step is to remove all of the dust and other particulate matter that has accumulated on the board. This can be accomplished by using a hairdryer that is set to blow cold air at full speed. The cold air from the hairdryer dislodges the loosely bound particles on the board and disperses them in the air.
  • The board should then be cleaned with a dry cloth to remove any loosely bound material.
  • In the third step, wet a dry cotton cloth with denatured alcohol and gently rub it across the motherboard.
  • The fourth step is to wait for the residual alcohol on the board to evaporate in the air, leaving a clean motherboard behind.

What are Necessary Considerations to be taken? :

Even though denatured alcohol has a low toxicity level, it is still a good idea to clean motherboards in well-ventilated areas. When working with this chemical, you should always wear eye protection because the fumes can cause eye irritation. To avoid skin contact, wear rubber gloves when using the alcohol on the board. The process of rubbing the alcohol on the board should be done gently because using too much force may dislodge or damage electronic components. Because alcohol is highly flammable, keep the alcohol container and the board away from heat and fire while you are working on it.

What are the Other Alcohols for Cleaning Motherboards? :

There are some other alcohol formulas too that can also be used for cleaning motherboards and PCBs.

Isopropyl 990:

Cleaning motherboards with IPA 99 per cent IPA 99 is a safe and effective cleaning solution for personal motherboards and electronic devices. Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol (91 per cent) may also be effective, but the purest IPA available is preferred. When using IPA 99 per cent to clean a computer or electronic device, exercise extreme caution.

90% Isopropyl Alcohol:

Because of its evaporation properties, 90% isopropyl alcohol is preferable. That being said, if you have to use the 70% one, it will do the job; just be extra careful to shake off any excess liquid and allow it to dry for a full day, or lightly dry it with a hairdryer.

Ethanol-Alcohol:

As long as the percentage of ethanol alcohol is high enough, you can and should use it to clean your motherboard. Q-tips and coffee filters can also be used to access harder parts at 75% and higher.

Isopropyl Alcohol:

It is best to avoid using any isopropyl mixture with a concentration of less than 90% on circuit boards and other electrical components. If you’re just cleaning the adhesive off of something metal or plastic, 70 per cent will suffice, but be careful not to spill it on any circuits or wires. Isopropyl alcohol should not be used on any other component besides thermal paste, fans, and the motherboard. Use a cotton swab, a paper towel, or a toothbrush to gently apply alcohol—do not spray. If you don’t use pure isopropyl alcohol, you risk leaving residue on the cleaned surface.

However, not all electronic components can be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. Polycarbonate electronic components, such as motherboards, seals, and gaskets, are particularly vulnerable to isopropyl alcohol cleaning solutions.

Using Hand Sanitizer to Clean Motherboards:

It is not advisable to clean electronic devices with any liquid. Liquids, even thicker liquids like hand sanitiser, can easily pass through small cracks and crevices in the case and enter the device’s interior, causing permanent damage and electrical shorts. Liquids like these can actually harm your electronics, especially motherboards. Other alcohols which are advised above can be used but hand sanitiser is not recommended at all.

Conclusion:

Cleaning your motherboard with denatured alcohol is very easy however you need to a little careful while doing it. You should always clean the electronics with utmost safety and care. As a little mistake can destroy your electronics. Cleaning the motherboard with denatured alcohol is briefly explained above. However, there are other chemicals too that can also be used for this method. All the do’s and dont’s are explained hence one should need to be very careful while doing it.
